5 Days Gorilla Chimps and Lake Kivu

This 5 Days Gorilla Chimps and Lake Kivu in Volcanoes and Nyungwe National Parks give a quick experience into the Land of 1000 hills. The safari starts with a city tour to the Kigali Genocide memorial grounds at Gisozi. Where victims of 1994 were laid to rest and often relatives come to visit and remember the lost life. The safari then proceeds to the Northern Province to Volcanoes National Park. The home to the endangered mountain gorillas, after trekking, you will be rewarded by the beautiful views of Lake Kivu for relaxation. Before you continue for Chimpanzee trekking in the Nyungwe National Park in the South of Lake Kivu.

Detailed Safari.

Day 1: Pick up from Kigali Airport for a City Tour.

Meet up and greet with Alive Africa Vacations Safari Guide at the airport who will warmly welcome you into the land of 1000 hills. From here you will drive to Kigali City for a city tour, it will involve checking out the different Arts and crafts Markets within the city where you can buy some souvenirs to carry along as you go back home, after you continue at Kigali Genocide Memorial for background and history about the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Outside the Show, the room is the gardens with mass graves where more than 250,000 victims were laid to rest. After this experience, you will have your lunch in the City and prepare for the approximately 2 hours’ drive to Volcanoes National Park in the Northern Province of the country.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Transfer to Lake Kivu.

After an early breakfast, meet your guide and drive to the Park headquarters in Ruhengeri for Briefing before you go for gorilla tracking. You will meet fellow trekkers and be divided into groups before you head out for the gorilla tracking activity. The activity is strenuous and requires a certain level of fitness since t involves hiking. On finding these gentle apes, you will be given an hour with them to take pictures and videos of them as they continue with their day-to-day activities in the jungle. After tracking, return to the briefing point for trekking certificates, drive back to the lodge for hot and transfer to Lake Kivu for relaxation and overnight.

Day 3: Kayaking on Lake Kivu and driving to Nyungwe National Park.

Rise early for breakfast, and head out into the Lake for some adventure, you will put on your sports clothes and go out for briefing about the Dos and don’ts while on the waters. Lake Kivu is one of the deepest lakes in the world with beautiful surroundings of the rolling hills covered with green vegetation. During your exploration of the lake on Kayaks, you will find local Fisher Men enchanting melodiously as they come back with their catch from the previous night. After 2 or 3 hours of Kayaking, drive back to your lodge for lunch and get ready to relocate to Nyungwe National Park in the Sothern Province.

Day 4:  Chimpanzee tracking and Canopy walk.

Following an early breakfast, drive to the park headquarters for briefing about the Chimpanzee tracking,  Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest Tropical rain forest with over 15 species of Primates and the Chimpanzees being one of them, there are large troops of chimpanzees habituated in this forest, once with these apes, you will be given 1 hour to observe them as go on with daily activities within the forest.  This trek is an interesting one, along the trail several other small primates can be spotted like the black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, different forest bird species and waterfalls deep within the forest since this forest is the main Catchment spot for the country. after this amazing experience, you will meet your guide and back to the lodge for lunch and get ready for another adventure on the canopy walk.

Rwanda’s Nyungwe canopy walk is one of the major highlights you cannot miss on your safari to Rwanda. The canopy walks are suspended high on top of tall trees giving you an amazing view of the forest. Sightings of the forest from above are so amazing, it is an excellent walkway for bird lovers because several bird species are spotted along this trail. After this thrilling walk, drive to the lodge for dinner and nightfall.

Day 5: Drive back to Kigali to End the Safari.

Wake up at your pace, have breakfast, and embark on your return journey to Kigali through the winding roads and beautiful hills, reaching the city at lunchtime, drop off at the hotel for Lunch and end the Safari.
