The Nakayima tree, named for Nakayima, the wife of Ndahura, the founder of the Bachwezi dynasty, who ruled over the Bunyoro Kitara Empire centuries ago, is said to be approximately 600 years old, according to scientific estimates.

Day 2: Toro Royal Palace and the Karambi Royal Tombs – Travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Around 8:00 am, after breakfast, start the Karuzika tour of the Toro Royal Palace. It serves as the official home of Oyo Nyimba Iguru, the youngest king in history and the Omukama/King of the Tooro Kingdom. With a view of Fort Portal City and the surrounding areas, the Palace is perched on Kabarole Hill. More than 180 years have passed since the founding of the Kingdom of Tooro. The Kingdom began as a chiefdom under the Empire of Kitara, which is a Rutooro word meaning “The Empire of Light.” Over time, it underwent three dynasties: the Batembuzi, Bachwezi, and Babiito.

The Bachwezi Empire owned the ancestral residence of former US President Barrack Obama. The Babiito, to whom the current Toro King belongs, succeeded the Bachwezi dynasty. You have a tour of the palace, looking at the royal accoutrements and the coronation ceremony. After a retreat encounter, head to the Karambi Royal Tombs, which is roughly 5 km from the Palace. Three of Tooro’s most well-known kings, including King Kaboyo, the founding father, are buried there.

After lunch, drive 3–4 hours to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you can take in breathtaking views of Africa’s tallest mountain range, the 5,109-meter-high Rwenzori Mountains, which are covered in snow. Discovering the history, customs, and culture of the Great Tooro Kingdom was the day’s high point.

Start a three to four-hour game drive on the savannah plains of the Kasenyi sector of the magnificent Queen Elizabeth National Park after enjoying a hot cup of Ugandan tea or coffee at around six in the morning.

In addition to having a wealth of species, Kasenyi is one of the park’s most beautiful areas, particularly in the morning when the first rays of sunlight fall on the savannah. See a variety of animals, including lions, buffalos, elephants, hyenas, waterbucks, bushbucks, Uganda kobs, hippos, and others.

Additionally, keep an eye out for unique bird species such as the African Skimmer, Brown Snake Eagle, Black-bellied bustard, Long-crested Eagle, Red-throated spurfowl, Yellow-throated longclaw, White-backed vulture, White-headed vulture, and Grey-crowned crane (Uganda national bird), to mention a few. Head back to the lodge for lunch and leisure.

Drive to Mweya Jetty in the afternoon for a 2-hour boat ride on the 40 Kazinga waterway, which runs between Lakes George and Edward. This is another amazing, life-changing event.

In addition to the many elephants, crocodiles, and water birds, such as the African Open-billed, Yellow-billed, and Saddle-billed Storks, Marabou storks, African spoonbills, African jacana, Water Thick-knee, and Pink-backed Pelicans, this area is home to one of the densest concentrations of hippo in the world. After the activity, head back to the lodge to spend the night there.

The Katwe villagers have survived since the 16th century thanks to this unique lake, which is far too salty to sustain much wildlife. They spend their days traversing the network of roads that wind around the lake and gathering salt from its milky waters while basking in the tropical sun. Proceed to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park after the morning activities.

  • Accommodations: Mount Gahinga Lodge, which is upscale and luxurious.
  • Moderate: Traveler’s Rest Kisoro and Lake Chahafi Resort
  • Meal Plan: breakfast lunch, and dinner.

Day 5: Explore Mgahinga Gorilla National Park’s Batwa Heritage Trail and unwind at the lodge.

Proceed to the Ntebeko tourist center for a briefing regarding the Batwa Trail adventure, which begins at 8.30 am, after your breakfast at approximately 7:30. The Batwa/Twa (pygmy) people are introduced to you along the way. They are a hunter-gatherer tribe that has relied on the forest for food, medicine, and shelter for many centuries.

A native Twa guide leads the hike and describes how the Twa people lived in the forest until being forced out when it was turned into a national park. As you follow the trail along the lower slopes of the Virunga, your tour guide will show you a number of traditional practical skills, including how to make fire by rubbing sticks together, how to make a bivouac, how to hunt and trap, how to practice shooting a bow and arrow, and how to fetch water in a bamboo cup.

A discussion of the Batwa people’s contemporary predicament is also included in the route. It is a trip back to the real culture, which is currently in danger of going extinct. After almost seven hours of the Batwa Trail Experience, you head back to the lodge for dinner, rest, and overnight.

  • Accommodation: Luxur: Mount Gahinga Lodge
  • Mid-range: Lake Chahafi Resort/Traveler’s Rest Kisoro

Day 6: Take a drive to Nshenyi Cultural Village to have a better understanding of the Banyankole people’s traditional way of life.

After a leisurely breakfast at 8.30 am today, drive from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park to Nshenyi Cultural Village in Ntugamo District to get a taste of the Banyankole people’s traditional way of life.

Before reaching Mbarara and then Ntugamo, the drive will take you through breathtaking rural scenery as you explore the locals’ hamlet.

Nshenyi is roughly an hour’s drive from Mbarara town and thirty minutes from Ntugamo town. You come to the lodge to unwind, have supper, and spend the night there.

Nshenyi has always been a pastoralist region. Acacia trees, savanna grass, and infinite rolling hills make up the topography, which is perfect for raising cattle. Numerous farms in the region grow a range of commercial and subsistence crops, and there are sizable areas dedicated to banana plantations.

  • Accommodation: Nshenyi Cultural Village
  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7: Return to Kampala after exploring Nshenyi Cultural Village.

Around six in the morning, get up early for breakfast. Explore the customs of the Banyankole people during a cultural experience that begins after breakfast. After using the locally constructed earth trough to water the animals, you withdraw to the cultural village. You agree to have a traditional meal, in which you can also take part. Then embark on a drive back to Kampala.

Day 8: Go on the Kampala Cultural Tour and see the Uganda National Museum and Craft Centers as well as Kabaka’s Palace.

Explore the history and culture of Kampala, a city with a rich and unique culture, after a leisurely breakfast at around 8.30 am. You take a tour of Kabaka’s palace on Mengo Hill, known as Olubiri.Discover the history and cultural legacy of the Buganda Kingdom, one of Africa’s last great, unbroken kingdoms, which was established roughly 600 years ago. As long as the Kabaka (King) is alive, the old fire will continue to burn. The Bulange Royal Building, the traditional center for Lukiiko (parliament), is accessible by walking along the Royal Mile, proving that Buganda had a functioning parliament even prior to the coming of Europeans.

The eight-day Uganda Cultural Tour continues to Kabaka’s Lake, a man-made lake that was excavated in 1880 by the Baganda people on the orders of their Kabaka/King, Mwanga, to serve as an escape route to Lake Victoria during British colonial battles.

You eat lunch at one of the city’s greatest restaurants. Following lunch, you go to the Uganda National Museum, which opened its doors in 1908 and is the oldest museum in East Africa. A remarkable collection covering more than two million years of human history may be seen at the museum.
