Treasures of Budongo Forest a must-see destination found in the southern region of the spectacular Murchison Falls National Park. With an area of approximately 825 square kilometers, this forest is the biggest natural forest in Uganda. Known for hosting chimpanzees and several bird species in Kaniyo Pabidi and Royal Mile, Budongo is one of the attractions in Murchison Falls National Park.

The Chimpanzees

The main attraction of any trip to Budongo Forest National Park is the chimpanzees. You may get a closer look at the chimpanzees by participating in the chimp trekking activities. Given that they share more than 98% of their DNA with humans, chimpanzees are our closest cousins. Budongo Forest, which is located inside Murchison Falls National Park, is one location where you might see these apes.

There are a few chimpanzees in Budongo Forest, and some of them have been habituated, or got used to being near people. You may participate in the chimpanzee trekking activity with the assistance of armed ranger guides and spend an hour with a chimpanzee family if you purchase a chimpanzee trekking permit. This will allow you to capture pictures, film movies, and observe them going about their regular lives.

In addition to chimpanzee trekking, visitors may spend almost four hours with the semi-habituated chimpanzees in Budongo Forest.  Chimpanzee Habituation. By allowing hikers to participate in the activities, chimps can become used to the presence of humans in their natural environment. Trekkers can capture pictures and videos throughout the habituation process to save the moments for later.

Birds

Birds are another draw in Budongo Forest, with around 360 different kinds. Using different trails and knowledgeable birding guides, birdwatchers may identify some of the species seen in the Royal Mile or Kaniyo Pabidi. Tropical rainforests are home to the little, vividly colored Puvel’s illadopsis, a unique bird species to Budongo forest.
Fire-crested alethe, golden-crowned woodpecker, hairy-breasted barbet African dwarf kingfisher, blue-throated roller, scaly-breasted illadopsis, African pitta, red-headed malimbe, piping hornbill, cassin’s spine tail, blue-breasted kingfisher, and nahan’s francolin are just a few of the other bird species found in Budongo forest.

Wildlife

Because Budongo Forest is part of Murchison Falls National Park, it’s easy to go on game drives to see the park’s many wildlife species. You may see exotic creatures including giraffes, buffaloes, lions, leopards, waterbucks, Uganda kobs, warthogs, sitatungas, elephants, and spotted hyenas, to name a few, on morning, evening, or night game drives.

When is the best time to visit Budongo Forest?

The greatest time of year to visit the Budongo forest is during the dry months, which are June through September and December through February. Because there is little to no rainfall throughout these months, the walking pathways remain dry and convenient. During these months, there is less vegetation, making it easier to see the forest’s charms.

Travelers can still visit Budongo during the off-peak season of March through May and October through November. Because there is little sunshine and a lot of rainfall, these months are known as the rainy season. The exercise can be challenging because to the muddy and slick trekking pathways, and the dense vegetation makes it difficult to see the sights.

How to Reach Budongo Forest

Budongo Forest is accessible by road and is situated in the southern region of Murchison Falls National Park. From Entebbe, you may go by road to Budongo Forest via Kampala, Luwero, Nakasongla, and Masindi. The sole southern white rhino habitat in Uganda, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, is a possible stopover on this about five-hour drive.
