Bwindi forest Rushegura gorilla group

Rushegura gorilla group family in Bwindi gorilla Forest arose from the Habinyanja group in 2002 when the brother Silverback took over leadership

As previously stated, the Rushegura gorilla group family in Bwindi gorilla Forest arose from the Habinyanja group in 2002 when the brother Silverback took over leadership from elder brother Mugurusi. They argued and decided to separate, with each now belonging to a different group. The Rushegura gorilla group family began with twelve individuals. The Rushegura family may be found in the northern portion of the park in the Buhoma sector, 15 minutes from the trailhead in Mukono.

Bwindi forest Rushegura gorilla group family

This group, initially known as Habinyanja group 2, was named Rushegura after a tree species in the forest called “Ebishegura” that was abundant where this group went after split. Due to a lack of stability, this group continued to migrate from Uganda to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where they eventually settled in Buhoma areas and may occasionally be seen wandering around the Buhooma lodge compound.

The Mwirima spearheaded this separation, leaving with 12 people, including five ladies. By April 2010, the family had grown to 19 members, demonstrating his courage in creating a peaceful and stable home. Because the family had already become accustomed while it was still a Haminyanja group, it was promptly opened for tourists in 2002. This is a suitable group for trekking while learning about the history, composition, and eating habits.

Despite his young age, Mwirima was a brave silverback who would fight for his family against any external aggression by using various tools such as his canine teeth, tree branches, chest-pounding, and hitting his palms on the ground as a sign of victory over his family enemies.

Mwirima, the late, used to map the group’s movements, particularly where there would be ample food. He was also influential in minimizing conflicting areas/groups that were avoided, and in the event of a surprise attack, he would not dare to fight. Sadly, Mwirima died in 2014, and the gang is now commanded by a strong blackbuck.

The recently habituated Katwe gorilla family

Buhoma sector, located in the northern part of the park, originally had only three fully habituated gorilla families, but due to high demand, the Katwe gorilla family was recently habituated and added to the three families, making Buhoma sector home to four fully habituated gorilla families that tourists can trek. The increased number of gorilla families has made gorillas more accessible to tourists in the Buhoma region.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority’s introduction of the Katwe gorilla group in Buhoma has boosted the number of gorilla permits available from twenty-four to the other three groups, Habinyanja, Rushegura, and Mubare, for a total of 32 each day. This showed that our passengers might book gorilla permits in advance for this area, keeping in mind that each group is limited to 8 permits per day, as noted.

The habituation procedure for the Katwe gorilla family began in 2015 and lasted three years. In 2018, the group was opened for tourism after an announcement was sent to all tour companies in Uganda to begin reserving permits for passengers to visit this group. Habituation is done to ensure that the gorillas are aware of humans, so that travelers are safe when visiting these gorilla species. The group was named “Katwe” since it was spotted by researchers/trackers at the top of the hill.

The Katwe group is located in the northern part of the park and consists of a dominant silverback, two infants, and approximately four females. It is important to note that the exact number of individuals in the Katwe family is unknown, but Alive Africa Adventures, as a leading tour operator in East Africa, will be able to inform you as soon as the exact number of gorilla families in this group is established by the relevant authorities. This gorilla group was habituated alongside the Christmas gorilla group in Nkuringo, who were born on Christmas Day.
