In Semuliki National Park, chimpanzee trekking activities are an unforgettable experience. One of Uganda’s ten national parks, Semuliki National Park is a popular tourist attraction in western Uganda. The 220 square kilometers of lowland tropical vegetation make up the national park. Semuliki National Park is situated in the Bundibudyo district, close to Kibale Forest National Park and Rwenzori National Park.

Although there are other locations in Uganda where chimpanzees can be seen, Kibale Forest National Park has long been the top chimpanzee trekking destination. Despite having a small population, Semuliki National Park is one of the locations in Uganda where visitors can interact with chimpanzees. A few chimpanzees are available for hiking and habituation operations in Semuliki National Park.

There aren’t many chimpanzees in Semuliki, therefore visitors are less likely to see them. Chimpanzee trekking begins at eight in the morning and lasts for at least four hours. Chimpanzees occasionally pass over Semuliki National Park’s sheer cliffs, and trekkers can’t take the chance of going there.

A chimpanzee permit is required in order to interact with the chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National Park. The park headquarters charges varying rates for the chimpanzee permits. Foreign residents, foreign non-residents, and citizens of East African member nations are all subject to a fee. People over the age of twelve go trekking twice a day, in the morning and the evening.

Chimpanzee Trekking Activity

The park headquarters in Ntandi is where chimpanzee trekking in Semuliki National Park begins. The armed ranger guides will meet you here and give you a briefing on the activities’ laws and restrictions. When tourists encounter chimpanzees in the jungle, they are instructed on the dos and don’ts of walking with them for security reasons. Following the lecture, visitors are given ranger guides to assist them through the jungle before the search begins.

Due to the landscape of Semuliki, searching for chimpanzees can take up to four hours. In order to find the chimpanzees quickly, rangers speak with one another. While hunting for the chimpanzees, visitors can come upon some of the park’s species on several pathways.

There are a few habituated chimpanzees in Semuliki, but the majority are wild. Tourists can interact with the habituated chimps if they are fortunate enough to find them. For an hour, visitors are permitted to walk alongside the chimpanzees, which allows them to observe their daily activities, such as hunting, nesting, and much more, as well as learn about their routines.

The hikers can leave the lowland tropical forest and return to their starting sites after trekking with chimpanzees. Finding the chimpanzees is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will always leave you with pleasant memories. Meeting the many species, primates, birds, and other park attractions is another advantage of chimpanzee trekking.

In Semuliki National Park, chimpanzee trekking is done year-round, but the dry season is reportedly the best. The park receives little to no rainfall from July to September and October to November, which keeps the park’s hiking routes dry and manageable.

Due to Semuliki National Park’s proximity to Kibale Forest National Park, visitors can also experience chimpanzee trekking in Kibale. With the largest chimpanzee population in East Africa, Kibale Forest National Park offers the best chimpanzee trekking. Two huge chimpanzee groups may be seen in Kibale Forest National Park, where more than 72 people hike every day.

Because there is a greater than 90% possibility of sighting primates, travelers enjoy trekking with chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National Park. By the time they enter the forest, rangers are aware of the chimps’ locations and the quickest paths to take. Over 60 chimpanzees make up the chimpanzee teams in Kibale Forest National Park, and the hikers leave the group feeling content.

Meeting the more than 13 primates that have been documented in Kibale Forest National Park is possible when trekking with chimpanzees. Visitors can observe many tree species, birds, and forest creatures. The cost of hiking with chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National Park is $200 for foreigners, $150 for foreigners, and UGX150,000 for East African nationals.
